35 Years of The Lunar Rogue: Downtown Fredericton’s Home Away From Home

Nestled in the heart of downtown Fredericton, the Lunar Rogue stands as a testament to community spirit and camaraderie. Recently, we caught up with Nathan Colford, one of the new co-owners and general manager, who shared insights into the welcoming environment that makes the Rogue a cherished local hub.

A Smooth Transition

After 35 years of operation, the Rogue saw a change in ownership last July, a transition thoughtfully led by a team of dedicated staff members, including Nathan, who has been part of the Rogue family for over 20 years. The new co-ownership structure—comprised of Nathan, Karen, Vicki, Robyn, and Trevor—ensures that the pub remains a familiar and friendly spot for patrons.

“We’re like people’s living rooms,” Nathan explained, reflecting on the strong relationships fostered over the years. Regulars often return to the Rogue to reconnect, especially during holidays, making it feel like a second home.

A Unique Whiskey Destination

What sets the Rogue apart is its impressive whiskey selection—over 1,000 bottles, making it one of the largest collections in North America. Nathan emphasized the importance of this whiskey tradition under the new management. “We still work closely with Frank (Scott), one of the previous owners, to expand our offerings,” he noted, highlighting the rarity of many bottles available.

This unique selection not only draws in regulars but also attracts tourists eager to experience Fredericton’s whiskey scene. The Rogue even has an innovative “Rogue’s Whiskey” app, developed by former owner Brian (Freeman), which allows customers to explore tasting notes and prices.

Community Commitment

The Lunar Rogue prides itself on its community involvement. From donations to sponsorships for local sports teams, Nathan and his team actively engage with the Fredericton community. They even host special events, like whiskey tastings during the New Brunswick Highland Games, further solidifying their role as a community-oriented business.

Looking ahead, Nathan expressed excitement about new initiatives aimed at enhancing community ties, especially with students and local organizations. The team is also revamping the menu and cocktail offerings, collaborating with local breweries to expand their beer selection.

A Hub for All

In a city brimming with culture and charm, the Lunar Rogue stands out as a welcoming space where everyone feels at home. With a commitment to community, an unparalleled whiskey collection, and a dedicated team, the Rogue is more than just a pub; it’s a gathering place that fosters friendships and memories.

So whether you’re a long-time local or a first-time visitor, step into the Lunar Rogue and experience the warm hospitality that makes it a true gem in Fredericton’s downtown landscape.
